Avelox is an antibiotic prescribed to treat bacterial infections and is in a group ofantibiotics called fluoroquinolones.
Avelox may also be used for conditions that are not described in this medication guide.
Avelox can cause swelling or tearing of tendons, which are the fibers that connect your bonesto your muscles. Your Achilles’ tendon of your heel is especially at risk. You are more likely toexperience this effect if you are over age 60, if you take steroid medication, or if you have hada kidney, heart, or lung transplant. If you experience sudden pain, swelling, tenderness,stiffness, or movement problems in any of your joints stop taking Avelox and call yourdoctor.
Avelox is in FDA pregnancy category C. The effect of Avelox to an unborn baby is not known.You should tell your doctor if you are pregnant, or if you plan to become pregnant beforestarting treatment with Avelox. You should not use Avelox without telling your doctor if you arebreast-feeding a baby, as we do not know if Avelox passes into breast milk.
You should avoid exposure to sunlight or tanning beds while taking Avelox, as it can make yousunburn more easily. Be sure to wear protective clothing and use sunscreen that is SPF 30 orhigher when you are outdoors. If you have burning, redness, itching, a rash, or swelling afterbeing in the sun call your doctor immediately.
Avelox may cause diarrhea during treatment. This may be a side effect or the sign of apossible new infection. If you have diarrhea that is watery or bloody, you should stop takingAvelox right away and call your doctor. Do not use any anti-diarrhea medications unless yourdoctor tells you to do so.
You should not use Avelox if you are allergic to levofloxacin, ciprofloxacin (Cipro),gemifloxacin (Factive), ofloxacin (Floxin) or norfloxacin (Noroxin).
Tell your doctor if you have a history of an allergic reaction to an antibiotic.
Let your doctor know if you have a heart rhythm disorder and if you take amiodarone(Cordarone, Pacerone), dofetilide (Tikosyn), disopyramide (Norpace), ibutilide (Corvert),procainamide (Procan, Pronestyl), propafenone (Rythmol), quinidine (Quin-G), or sotalol(Betapace).
If you have myasthenia gravis, joint problems, kidney or liver disease, epilepsy or seizuresyou should tell your doctor before taking Avelox.
If you have low levels of potassium in your blood or a personal or family history of Long QTsyndrome you should inform your doctor before starting treatment with Avelox.
Refrain from taking antacids that contain magnesium or aluminum, such as Maalox, Mylanta, orRolaids, the ulcer medicine sucralfate (Carafate), didanosine (Videx) powder or chewable tablets,as well as vitamin and mineral supplements that contain iron or zinc within 8 hours before or 4
hours after taking Avelox. These medications have the potential to weaken Avelox and make it lesseffective.
You should inform your doctor if you are taking any of the following:
Other drugs you take that are not listed may interact with Avelox. You should tell your doctorabout all of the medications you use. This includes prescription drugs, vitamins, supplements andherbal products, and over the counter medications. You should not begin taking a new medicationwithout telling your doctor first.
You should take Avelox exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not use Avelox in larger orsmaller amounts, or for shorter or longer than recommended. Follow the directions on yourprescription label exactly.
You can take Avelox with or without food.
Take Avelox with a full glass of water, at least 8 ounces.
You should drink several extra glasses of fluid daily while you are taking Avelox.
You should take Avelox at the same time every day.
You must take Avelox for the full amount of time your doctor has prescribed . Your symptomsmay improve before the infection is completely cleared, but you still need to complete yourcourse of antibiotic treatment. Failure to do so may result in an increased risk of furtherinfections that are resistant to antibiotics.
You should store Avelox at room temperature, and away from heat and moisture.
If your symptoms get worse while taking Avelox and you have a fever contact your doctor rightaway.
If you miss a dose of Avelox you should attempt to take the missed dose as soon as youremember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose do not take the missed dosein addition to your regular dose.

Avelox is available as a tablet in 400 mg strength. The tablet is oblong, red and film-coated,imprinted with BAYER on one side and M400 on the other side.
Avelox dosages vary for each individual based on their age, condition and situation. Yourdoctor will tell you the right dose of Avelox for you to take. Do not change or alter your Aveloxdose without talking to your doctor first.
If you suspect that you have overdosed with the Avelox you should seek emergency helpimmediately.
The main ingredient in Avelox is moxifloxacin hydrochloride.Inactive ingredients include microcrystalline cellulose, lactose monohydrate, croscarmellosesodium, magnesium stearate, hypromellose, titanium dioxide, polyethylene glycol and ferricoxide.
