What is Nystatin?

Nystatin is an oral suspension that is an antifungal medication used to treat yeast infections of the mouth.

Nystatin may also be used for reasons not stated in this medication guide.

Key Facts About Nystatin

Nystatin will not treat fungal infections that are in any part of your body other than your mouth. Tell your doctor if you have any others type of fungal infection besides in your mouth, like athlete’s foot, jock itch, ringworm, or a vaginal yeast infection.

Nystatin is in FDA pregnancy category C. Nystatin is not known to harm an unborn baby. You should tell your doctor if you are pregnant, or if you plan to become pregnant before you start to take Nystatin. You should not use Nystatin without telling your doctor if you are breastfeeding a baby, as we do not yet know if Nystatin passes into breast milk.

You must take Nystatin for the full length of time that your doctor has prescribed. Do not stop taking Nystatin because you think you are better without talking to your doctor first.

Before You Take Nystatin

If you are allergic to Nystatin or other antifungal medications do not use this medication.

Tell your doctor if you have any other fungal infections before beginning treatment with Nystatin.

Nystatin Drug Interactions

You should inform your doctor if you are taking any of the following:

• Brewer’s Yeast

Other drugs you take that are not listed may interact with Nystatin. You should tell your doctor about all of the medications you use. This includes prescription drugs, vitamins, supplements and herbal products, and over the counter medications. You should not begin taking a new medication without telling your doctor first.

Directions for Taking Nystatin

You should take Nystatin exactly as directed by your doctor. It is important that you do not take Nystatin in larger or smaller amounts, or for longer or shorter than recommended. Follow the directions on your prescription label and follow any dose changes carefully if your doctor instructs you to change your dose.

Nystatin may be taken with or without food.

The Nystatin oral suspension must be taken with the special dose cup provided for you.

You must take Nystatin for the full amount of time your doctor has prescribed for you to take it.

Nystatin needs to be stored at room temperature, and away from light, moisture and heat. Keep your bottle tightly closed when you are not using it. Do not freeze Nystatin.

If you miss a dose of Nystatin you should attempt to take the missed dose as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose do not take the missed dose in addition to your regular dose.

Nystatin Side Effects

If you experience any of the following adverse effects you should stop taking Nystatin and seek emergency medical help immediately:

• allergic reactions such as breathing difficulties, hives, or swelling of your face, lips, throat or tongue

Less serious side effects of Nystatin may include:

• diarrhea
• nausea
• upset stomach
• mild vomiting

It should be noted that this is not a complete list of possible side effects of Nystatin. You should contact your physician for a complete list and medical advice regarding these effects.

Nystatin Description and Dosing

Nystatin is available as an oral suspension for oral administration. The oral suspension has a cherry flavor and is light creamy yellow in color.

The dose of Nystatin comes in a ready to use suspension that is supplied in a 5 mL unit dose cup.

You should consult your doctor for specific dosing pertaining to you. Do not attempt to alter or change your dose without your physician’s consent.

If you suspect that you have overdosed with Nystatin you should seek emergency help immediately.

Ingredients in Nystatin

Nystatin is comprised of the main ingredient Nystatin. Inactive ingredients include alcohol, methylparaben, dibasic sodium phosphate, monobasic sodium phosphate, saccharin sodium, sucrose, glycerin, carboxymethylcellulose sodium, propylparaben, artificial wild cherry flavor # 14783 and purified water.
