Naprosyn is a medication to help relieve pain and inflammation caused by conditions like arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, tendinitis, bursitis, gout, or menstrual cramps as well as minor aches and pains and moderate pain in muscles, bones and joints. Naprosyn is an NSAID, or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug, and works by reducing the hormones that cause inflammation and pain. Naprosyn may also be used for purposes not indicated in this medication guide.
Naprosyn is in a group of drugs called nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, also known as NSAIDs.
The use of Naprosyn may cause heart or circulation problems, which can be life threatening. These problems may include heart attack or stroke, particularly if you use Naprosyn on a long-term basis.
You should not use Naprosyn before or after heart bypass surgery.
Naprosyn may rarely cause serious intestinal or stomach bleeding or perforations (forming of holes). These conditions are more likely to happen to older adults, and they can occur without warning and be fatal. You should contact your doctor immediately if you experience symptoms which may indicate intestinal bleeding, like tarry or bloody stools, or if you cough or vomit blood or a substance that looks like coffee grounds.
You should not drink alcohol while taking Naprosyn. You increase your risk of stomach bleeding if you drink alcohol while taking Naprosyn.
Seek emergency help if while taking Naprosyn you experience chest pain, weakness, shortness of breath, slurred speech, or problems with your vision or balance.
Naprosyn is in FDA pregnancy category C. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during treatment. Naprosyn may cause birth defects if taken during your last 3 months of pregnancy. Because Naprosyn can pass into breast milk and may harm a nursing baby, you should not take this medication if you are breast-feeding.
You should not give Naprosyn to a child younger than 2 years old without your doctor’s consent.
If you are allergic tonaproxen you should not take Naprosyn.
If you have an allergy or a history of allergic reactions to aspirin, sulfa drugs, or other NSAIDs you should not take Naprosyn.
You should not take other NSAID’s (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) like aspirin, ibuprofen, or ketoprofen while you are taking Naprosyn. Some cold and allergy medicines may have NSAIDs in them, so you should consult your doctor or pharmacist before taking any over the counter cold and allergy medications.
Tell your doctor if you a history of heart attack, stroke, or blood clots, or if you have congestive heart failure, heart disease or high blood pressure.
If you have a history of stomach ulcers or bleeding, liver or kidney disease, a seizure disorder like epilepsy or polyps in your nose you should tell your doctor before taking Naprosyn.
If you smoke or have asthma you should let your doctor know before starting treatment with Naprosyn.
Be aware that if taken long-term Naprosyn can increase your risk of heart or circulation problems like a heart attack or stroke. Do not take Naprosyn before or after bypass surgery.
Tell your doctor about your consumption of alcohol. Drinking a lot of alcohol and taking Naprosyn may increase your risk of stomach bleeding.
You should inform your doctor if you are taking any of the following:
Other drugs you take that are not listed may interact with Naprosyn. You should tell your doctor about all of the medications you use. This includes prescription drugs, vitamins, supplements and herbal products, and over the counter medications. You should not begin taking a new medication without telling your doctor first.
Naprosyn may be taken with or without food. If you are concerned that Naprosyn may upset your stomach you may take it with food or milk to lessen any potential stomach upset.
You should take Naprosyn exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Do not take Naprosyn in larger or smaller amounts, or for shorter or longer than recommended. Follow the directions on your prescription label.
If you are taking Naprosyn Oral Suspension you should shake it well before use. Be sure to use the proper measuring device, such as a special dose-measuring spoon or medicine cup. Do not use a regular kitchen table spoon. If you do not have a dose-measuring device, ask your pharmacist for one.
Your doctor may want to have your blood tested often if you take Naprosyn long-term.
Naprosyn may make you sunburn more easily. Be sure to wear protective clothing and use sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) when you are outside.
Naprosyn needs to be stored at room temperature, and away from light, moisture and heat.
If you miss a dose of Naprosyn you should attempt to take the missed dose as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose do not take the missed dose in addition to your regular dose.

Naprosyn is available in tablets. The dosages are 250 mg, which is yellow in color, 375 mg, which are pink, and 500 mg which are yellow. Naprosyn suspension is also available as a light orange-colored, opaque oral suspension, containing 125 mg/5 mL.
You should consult your doctor for specific dosing pertaining to you. Do not attempt to alter or change your dose without your physician’s consent.
If you suspect that you have overdosed with Naprosyn you should seek emergency help immediately.
The primary active ingredient in Naprosyn is naproxen and inactive ingredients in the tablets include croscarmellose sodium, iron oxides, povidone and magnesium stearate. Inactive ingredients in the oral suspension include sucrose, magnesium aluminum silicate, sorbitol solution and sodium chloride (39 mg/5 ml. 1.5 mEq), methylparaben, fumaric acid, FD&C Yellow No. 6, imitation pineapple flavor, imitation orange flavor and purified water.
