Aldactazide is a medication to treat hypertension and fluid retention (edema) in people withcirrhosis of the liver, congestive heart failure or nephrotic syndrome, which is a kidneydisorder.
This medication contains hydrochlorothiazide, which is a thiazide diuretic, or water pill,that helps prevent your body from absorbing too much salt, which can cause you to retain fluid.Aldactazide also contains Spironolactone, which is a potassium-sparing diuretic that alsoprevents your body from absorbing too much salt, which can lead to low potassium levels.
Aldactazide may also be used for purposes not described in this medication guide.
Aldactazide is in FDA pregnancy category C. You should not use Aldactazide if you arepregnant, as we do not yet know the effects this medication has on an unborn baby. You should notbreast-feed while taking Aldactazide, as this medication passes into breast milk.
While you are taking Aldactazide you should not drink alcohol. Because drinking alcohol canfurther lower your blood pressure, you may experience an increase in certain side effects ofAldactazide if you drink while taking this drug.
Unless your doctor has advised you to do so, you should not use potassium supplements or saltsubstitutes while you are taking Aldactazide.
Until you know how you will react to Aldactazide you should avoid getting up too fast from alying or sitting position, as you may experience dizziness. Be sure to get up slowly and steadyyourself to prevent a fall, especially when you first begin your treatment with Aldactazide.
If you suffer from vomiting, diarrhea, or heavy sweating you can easily become dehydratedwhile taking Aldactazide. This can lead to very low blood pressure, electrolyte disorders, orkidney failure. You should tell your doctor if you suffer from these symptoms while takingAldactazide, and be certain to drink plenty of water each day while you are taking thismedication.
Continue to use Aldactazide as your doctor has directed, and be sure to get your bloodpressure checked regularly.
If you are allergic to hydrochlorothiazide or spironolactone, or if you have kidney disease orare unable to urinate, have high potassium levels (hyperkalemia) or if you are taking potassiumsupplements you should not take Aldactazide.
If you have ever had an allergic reaction to sulfa drugs or penicillin you should let yourdoctor know before starting to take Aldactazide.
You should inform your doctor if you have liver disease, kidney disease, are on dialysis, haveheart disease or congestive heart failure before taking Aldactazide.
If you have diabetes, lupus, glaucoma, asthma, allergies or gout you should tell your doctorbefore starting treatment with Aldactazide.
Let your doctor know if you are taking any other blood pressure medication or steroid beforebeginning treatment with Aldactazide.
You should inform your doctor if you are taking any of the following:
Other drugs you take that are not listed may interact with Aldactazide. You should tell yourdoctor about all of the medications you use. This includes prescription drugs, vitamins,supplements and herbal products, and over the counter medications. You should not begin taking anew medication without telling your doctor first.
You should take Aldactazide exactly as directed by your doctor . It is important that you donot take Aldactazide in larger or smaller amounts, or for longer or shorter than recommended.Follow the directions on your prescription label and follow any dose changes carefully if yourdoctor instructs you to change your dose.
Aldactazide should be taken with a full glass of water
You may take Aldactazide with or without food.
You should avoid a diet that is high in salt while taking this medication.
You may need to take Aldactazide on a long-term basis for the treatment of high bloodpressure. It is important that you follow up with your doctor on a regular basis to be sure thatAldactazide is helping your condition and not causing you to have any adverse or harmfuleffects.
Aldactazide should be stored at room temperature, and away from both moisture and heat. Keepthe bottle tightly closed.
If you miss a dose of Aldactazide you should attempt to take the missed dose as soon as youremember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, or if your next dose isless than 12 hours away you should skip the dose you missed.
If you experience any of the following adverse effects you should stop taking Aldactazide andseek emergency medical help immediately.

Aldactazide tablets contain 25 mg of spironolactone (Aldactone) and 25 mg ofhydrochlorothiazide, and are round, tan, film coated, with SEARLE and 1011 debossed on one sideand Aldactazide and 25 on the other side. Tablets containing 50 mg of spironolactone (Aldactone)and 50 mg of hydrochlorothiazide are oblong, tan, scored, film coated, with SEARLE and 1021debossed on the scored side and Aldactazide and 50 on the other side.
If you suspect that you have overdosed with Aldactazide you should seek emergency helpimmediately.
Aldactazide contains the active ingredients hydrochlorothiazide and spironolactone. Otherinactive ingredients include calcium sulfate, corn starch, flavor, hydroxypropyl cellulose,hypromellose, iron oxide, magnesium stearate, polyethylene glycol, povidone, and titaniumdioxide.
