Detrol LA is a medication that treats the symptoms of overactive bladder, or OAB. Your doctor may have prescribed Detrol LA for you to treat the symptoms of overactive bladder, like incontinence or frequent and urgent urination. As an antimuscarinic or anticholinergic agent Detrol LA works by blocking a chemical that causes contractions of your bladder.
Detrol LA may also be used for conditions that are not described in this medication guide.
Detrol LA is in FDA pregnancy category C. Detrol LA is not known to harm an unborn baby. You should tell your doctor if you are pregnant, or if you plan to become pregnant before you start to take Detrol LA. You should not use Detrol LA without telling your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby, as we do not know if Detrol LA passes into breast milk.
Detrol LA may impair your thinking and reaction time. You should be cautious when driving or doing any activity that requires you to be alert.
You should not use Detrol LA if you are allergic to tolterodine or fesoterodine (Toviaz).
You may not be a candidate to take Detrol LA if you have untreated or uncontrolled narrow-angle glaucoma.
If you are unable to urinate, or have a blockage of your urinary tract, stomach or intestines you should not take Detrol LA.
Tell your doctor if you have liver disease, kidney disease or glaucoma before starting treatment with Detrol LA.
Let your doctor know if you have myasthenia gravis or a history of Long QT syndrome before taking Detrol LA.
You should inform your doctor if you are taking any of the following:
Other drugs you take that are not listed may interact with Detrol LA. You should tell your doctor about all of the medications you use. This includes prescription drugs, vitamins, supplements and herbal products, and over the counter medications. You should not begin taking a new medication without telling your doctor first.
You should take Detrol LA exactly as your doctor has prescribed you to. Do not use Detrol LA in larger or smaller amounts, or for shorter or longer than recommended. Follow the directions on your prescription label exactly.
You should take Detrol LA with a full glass (8 oz.) of water.
You can take Detrol LA with or without food.
Do not break, chew or crush the Detrol LA capsule. You should swallow the capsule whole.
If you miss a dose of Detrol LA you should attempt to take the missed dose as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose do not take the missed dose in addition to your regular dose.
Keep Detrol LA at room temperature, and away from both heat and moisture. Be sure to keep the bottle tightly closed.

Detrol LA is available as extended release capsules in dosages of 2 mg or 4 mg. Detrol LA Capsules 2 mg are blue-green with symbol and 2 printed in white ink. Detrol LA Capsules 4 mg are blue with symbol and 4 printed in white ink.
If you suspect that you have overdosed with the Detrol LA you should seek emergency help immediately.
Detrol LA contains the active ingredient tolterodine tartrate. Inactive ingredients are sucrose, starch, hypromellose, ethylcellulose, medium chain triglycerides, oleic acid, gelatin, and FD&C Blue #2. The 2 mg capsules also contain yellow iron oxide. Both capsule strengths are imprinted with a pharmaceutical grade printing ink that contains shellac glaze, titanium dioxide, propylene glycol, and simethicone.
