What is Dipentum?

Dipentum is a medication that is used to treat ulcerative colitis. Dipentum helps you by affecting substances in your body that cause diarrhea, inflammation and tissue damage.

Your doctor may also prescribe Dipentum for reasons not listed in this medication guide.

 

Key Facts About Dipentum

While taking Dipentum tell your doctor immediately if you develop symptoms such as itching, loss of appetite, pain in your upper stomach that may spread to your shoulder, nausea, pale skin, feeling light-headed or short of breath, rapid heart rate, dark urine, clay-colored stools, jaundice, weight loss, tiredness or chest pain.

Dipentum is in FDA pregnancy category C. Dipentum is known to harm an unborn baby and pass into breast milk. You should not take Dipentum if you are pregnant or breast-feeding.

Do not get a chicken pox vaccine, also called the varicella vaccine within six (6) weeks after you stop taking Dipentum.

 

Before You Take Dipentum

If you are allergic toolsalazine or to salicylates such as aspirin, Novasal, Doan’s Extra Strength, Salflex, Tricosal, and others you should not take Dipentum.

If you have asthma or allergies you should inform your doctor before taking Dipentum.

Let your doctor know if you have kidney or liver disease before you start treatment with Dipentum.

 

Dipentum Drug Interactions

  • blood thinners like warfarin (Coumadin,Jantoven)
  • mercaptopurine (Purinethol)
  • thioguanine

All drugs that you take may interact with Dipentum. You should tell your doctor about all of the medications you use. This includes prescription drugs, vitamins, supplements and herbal products, and over the counter medications. You should not begin taking a new medication without telling your doctor first.

 

Directions for Taking Dipentum

You should take Dipentum exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Do not take Dipentum in larger or smaller amounts, or for shorter or longer than recommended. Follow the directions on your prescription label.

You should take Dipentum with a full (8 oz.) glass of water.

Dipentum should be stored at room temperature in a dry place away from heat and moisture

If you miss a dose of Dipentum take the next dose as soon as you remember, and continue with your usual dosing schedule. Do not take extra medication to make up for a missed dose.

 

Dipentum Side Effects

If you experience any of the following adverse effects you should stop taking Dipentum and seek emergency medical help immediately:

  • allergic reaction including breathing difficulties, hives and swelling of your face, lips, throat and tongue
  • colitis that worsens, with a fever, bloody diarrhea, cramping and stomach pain
  • upper stomach pain alongside pale skin, feeling light-headed or short of breath, rapid heart rate, dark urine, clay-colored stools, jaundice, weight loss, tiredness, itching, loss of appetite and chest pain

Less serious side effects of Dipentum may include:

  • headache
  • heartburn
  • muscle or joint pain
  • nausea
  • skin rash and itching
  • upset stomach (mild)
  • urinating more often than normal

Dipentum Description and Dosing

Dipentum is available in 250 mg capsules. Each capsule is beige colored and imprinted with “Dipentum® 250 mg” on the capsule shell.

If you suspect that you have overdosed with Dipentum you should seek emergency help immediately.

 

Ingredients in Dipentum

The primary active ingredient in Dipentum is olsalazine sodium. Other inactive ingredients include magnesium stearate. The capsule shell contains the following inactive ingredients: black iron oxide, caramel, gelatin, and titanium dioxide.
